It's About You
As the temperatures keep creeping lower, our thermostats (somehow!) keep creeping higher. The increased use of our heating systems during the winter months means an increase in fossil fuel consumption and also higher energy bills. Considering this, the EPA and Renewable Choice encourage everyone to be more energy efficient. The EPA recommends five places to look and practical advice for home energy savings:
- Sealing and Insulating- One of the most cost effective ways to reduce energy bills is to air-seal holes, cracks and openings in your home and then add insulation to stop the flow of heat through the walls and ceiling.
- Heating Efficiency- Heat your home wisely and maintain your system. When your heating system is working at top performance you will be more comfortable and save money.
- Changing Lights- Lighting your home can represent 20 percent of your electricity bill and is one of the easiest places to start saving energy. If every household changed one light to an Energy Star one, together we'd save enough energy to light 7 million homes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to that of driving 1 million cars. Replace the five most frequently used lights or the bulbs in them, and save more than $60 each year in energy costs.
- Powering Down- Computers and other home electronics account for an increasing energy load in most homes, and often use energy even when switched off, but still plugged in.
- Looking for the Energy Star- The Energy Star label is on more than 40 different kinds of products, including lighting, electronics, heating and cooling equipment, and appliances. These products provide the performance you want while helping you save money and energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The EPA offers a complete list of energy saving tips that help protect the environment at their website, www.EPA.gov.
