Broward County Convention Center is attempting LEED Silver and purchasing green power for 4 points.
The Broward County/Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention Center of Florida is a 600,000 square foot facility situated on the waterfront of Port Everglades. Its recent investment into green power helped it gain an additional 4 points toward LEED certification, which it is pursuing at the Silver Level under the Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance rating system.
Key sustainable features of the project are:
- A lighting retrofit that replaces all bulbs with energy-efficient fluorescent and LED lighting;
- Upgrades of landscaping to introduce adaptive native plans and an efficient drip-irrigation system;
- Replacement of all air handling units with variable frequency drives and CO2 sensors;
- Installation of low-flow water-saving fixtures in all restrooms; and
- A 100% offset of all energy used over 2 years.
Broward County Convention Center's green power purchase will help keep 20,722,187 pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere, an impact similar to planting 85,276 fully mature trees.
