Kansas City Convention Center Purchases Green Power for LEED Certification
At nearly 400,000 square feet, the Kansas City Convention Center is one of the 10 largest convention center ballrooms in the country. It received a LEED Silver rating from the USGBC, using sustainable design features such as a controllable, digital day-lighting system that allows natural light into the space. The site team included 2 LEED Accredited Professionals documenting and tracking materials, construction methods, recycling and waste management.
The LEED Green Power Credit was achieved by the project for purchasing renewable energy to offset 2 years’ worth of electricity load that the entire building would require, with an environmental impact similar to planting 9,502 trees, or not driving 2,356,139 miles in an average U.S. passenger car.
Construction on the expansion of the convention center was done by Walton Construction, and the architectural design was courtesy of HNTB Architects and BNIM.
PERSONALLY SPEAKING
This project is worth a look - it spans a 6-lane highway, which must have required feats of design and construction ability to have even been possible. And to top it off it went LEED Silver! ~ Matt
