These two companies scored the highest in the furniture and appliance categories of the Climate Counts score.
Climate Counts is a non-profit that brings together consumers and companies. It encouragesresponsibility for the climate from corporations and conscious buying decisions at the consumer level.
By researching corporations, Climate Counts has developed a scorecard for 22 sectors which brings attention to corporate practices that affect the environment. Their mission is to have consumers take climate change seriously and to use the power of purchasing to send a message. Through its scoring it is shedding light on the positive changes that companies are making and where more attention is needed.
The Climate Counts rating system gives each company a score based on a scale of 1 to 100 and then puts them into a category of Striding, Starting or Stuck. Steelcase and Whirlpool both received a ‘Striding’ rating. Steelcase received a 53 and has the highest score and the only ‘striding’ category in the Home Furnishings category while Whirlpool brought in a 61 in the Appliance category.
This recent recognition follows Steelcase's EPA award for supporting wind power through its sponsorship of an entire wind farm. This innovative committed is to buy all the renewable energy credits (RECs) for at least five years. To be able to share its story, Steelcase also recently wrote a white paper, Expanding Green Power: A New Business Model that explains how it came to this decision and the impacts along the way.
