"We want to know that you've measured your impact. If you've
measured it and begun making progress, that's even better… All things
being equal, a [Walmart] buyer will of course choose a product that
scores better on the Index."
— Rand Waddoups, Senior Director of Strategy/Sustainability for Walmart
Since October 1, 2009, Wal-Mart buyers have started evaluating their suppliers based on Sustainability Assessment results. This score shows the level of leadership your organization demonstrates on issues concerning social and environmental responsibility. The Walmart Sustainability Index also presents a great opportunity for your business to identify both cost savings and opportunities for new revenue.
This is part of Walmart’s larger goal to develop credible, transparent measurements that will help them reward suppliers for innovative, affordable products that are more sustainable for people and the planet.
What’s top on Walmart’s list of topics? Energy and Climate. In fact, Walmart says 30% of your Sustainability Assessment score will be based on whether or not you have conducted a greenhouse gas inventory, how and to whom you report your emissions, and whether or not you have set public goals for reducing those emissions.
