Our electronics are the fastest-growing portion of our landfills. Here's more about reducing their pollution.
As the pressure from consumers to be kind to the environment builds and businesses focus on creating more sustainable practices continues, many companies are spending more energy announcing or advertising their recycling programs. The electronics industry in particular has been getting a lot of press both positive and negative about its environmental impact.
Dell recently publicized that it is expanding its recycling partnership with Goodwill Industries. It has added six new states and now touts more than 1,000 participating Goodwill retail stores nationwide. It sounds like Dell understands that convenience is king when it comes to consumer recycling program effectiveness and the company is making a difference. It has already reached its goal of recycling 275 million pounds of equipment and has had a recycling program in place since 2006.
Other examples of successful recycling programs:
- Panasonic: It works with MRM Recycling and offers a nation-wide program with more than 160 drop-off locations.
- HP: It has a program called Planet Partners that allows people to schedule a pickup of their old printers and computers for $17-$31 to cover the transportation costs. Throught this program, HP processes 3 million pounds of machinery each month.
- Sony: It has partnered with Waste Management to offer its customers a way to recycle its products at participating Waste management eCycling drop-off centers.
