Leading renewable energy consulting firm to continue partnership with global movement.
March 25, 2016 (Boulder, CO)– Renewable Choice Energy today announced its recertification as a B Corporation, a new kind of company using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. The company originally certified in 2011 and has renewed its certification for another two-year period.
Certified B Corporations meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability while voluntarily expanding their corporate responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests. These performance standards are comprehensive, measuring a company’s impact on its employees, suppliers, community, and the environment. There are now 1,640 Certified B Corporations across 130 industries in 47 countries, representing a diverse multi-billion dollar marketplace.
In order to achieve the B Corporation certification, Renewable Choice participated in the rigorous sustainability assessment process established by B Lab, the B Corporation certification body. The assessment included frank disclosure of information relating to company operations, hiring and promotion practices, environmental management practices, and governance. To achieve B Corporation status, companies must earn a minimum 80 out of 200 total possible points.
In 2015, Renewable Choice took an additional step to improve its assessment score by initiating an internal “B Team,” a group of Renewable Choice employees committed to improving the organization’s responsibility practices. The B Team meets on a regular basis to collaborate on ways to make the company a better place to work. The outcome of improvements led by the B Team contributed to an overall increase in the company’s score from 96 to 100, a significant achievement, as the impact assessment increases in difficulty year-over-year. The company achieved this score improvement by proactively addressing a variety of impact areas on the assessment including employee engagement, volunteerism & philanthropy, transparency, and many others.
One of the most notable areas of improvement in 2015 was Renewable Choice’s volunteerism and charitable giving practices. Renewable Choice committed to donating 1% of its annual revenue for the planet and also participated in the Colorado Gives Day corporate matching program. 67% of Renewable Choice employees participated in giving to 35 unique local charities. In addition, Renewable Choice has forged a meaningful partnership with non-profit GRID Alternatives which brings solar power to underprivileged communities.
“As a leader in environmental consulting, we strongly believe that our own corporate practices should align with our mission,” said Amy Haddon, Vice President of Communications & Engagement for Renewable Choice. “By using the B Impact Assessment as our benchmark, we’ve been able to consistently improve the sustainability of our operations year-over-year since we initially took the assessment in 2010..“
Since Renewable Choice’s original certification in 2011, the company has become increasingly involved in the B Corp community, working closely with B Lab and other B Corps to raise awareness about how business can be used as a force for good. In 2016, Renewable Choice has partnered with B Lab to assist in the creation and hosting of its annual leadership event for Colorado B Corps, BLD, which will be held April 28th at eTown.
“What we didn’t know when we originally certified in 2011 was that we would become part of such a passionate, dynamic community of practice,” says Haddon. “Aligning ourselves with others that share our values has brought us many positive benefits and recognition. We are deeply committed to the B Corporation movement and community, and are proud to have achieved our recertification.”
