We’re moving! One year ago, we united with Schneider Electric Energy & Sustainability Services (ESS). Starting Summer 2018, we will be joining forces online. You’ll be able to find us here.

Green Energy – Green Electricity – Green Power Energy | Renewable Choice

What is a renewable energy credit (REC)?

Renewable energy credits (sometimes referred to as renewable energy certificates) are an environmental commodity that represents the added value, environmental benefits, and cost of green energy above conventional methods of producing electricity (namely burning coal and natural gas). RECs help wind farms and other green electricity sources grow by making them more financially viable, thereby incentivizing further green energy development.

How do RECs work?

Green energy facilities generate RECs when they produce electricity. Purchasing these credits is the widely accepted way to reduce the environmental footprint of your electricity consumption and help fund future green power energy development. Purchasing RECs in the same quantity as your electricity consumption guarantees that the energy you use is added to the power grid from a renewable energy facility and supports the further development of green electricity.

Whether purchased from Renewable Choice or a local utility’s “Green Pricing” program, both systems are based on the purchase of RECs. Renewable Choice offers the same product as a local utility company but at a fraction of the price and with numerous value-added services.

How are RECs tracked?

Renewable Choice RECs are tracked and certified by the leading national third-party REC auditing organization, Green-e® Energy (a program of the not-for-profit Center for Resource Solutions) which guarantees they are not double-counted. For more information about Green-e®, visit our Renewable Energy Certification FAQ page.

Why should I buy wind power?

Buying wind power in the form of RECs is one of the most influential things you can do to reduce your personal environmental impact. Your purchase supports green energy growth, reduces our dependence on fossil fuels, fights climate change, helps support rural farmers, and sends a message about public support for green power energy.

Is this a donation?

No, your purchase is not a donation. You are buying the guarantee that the electricity you consume is replaced on the power grid with green electricity.  Green energy, just like organic food, costs a bit more. This guarantee comes in the form of a tracked and verified REC. You are actually buying a product, a type of commodity which comes with a certificate of purchase and marketing support.
